Rovaniemi and Santa’s Village – Lapland Holidaysfeatured
We arrived in Rovaniemi at midday, just in time to watch the sun rise and set pretty much within minutes, creating the incredible mid-day sky view. Rovaniemi itself is not very big, and I would definitely recommend hiring a car because all major attractions in the area are some distance away. Even if you have never driven in the snow, the roads in Finland are spectacular, you will have no problems and you will see much more. From Santa’s village to frozen waterfalls and wildlife park you will quickly run out of time to absorb it all!
Around Rovaniemi Town
Santa Claus Village
Although this is a major tourist destination and it gets very busy, it is still worth a visit particularly if you have kids. Just for fun, you can post a Christmas card back to yourself from Santa’s Post Office to receive next Christmas! I am waiting for mine to arrive on December 17! It gets very cold in winter so you will be very thankful for the open fires by which it is great to keep warm and they are set up all over the village, and there are plenty of cafes to have a delicious hot meal. Still, I would recommend hand and toe warmers if you intend to spend a day in the Village!
Reindeer safari: Take a quick reindeer safari in the Village and receive a Certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle!
Huskies safari: Go on a fast sled ride pulled by the Huskies around the park and then visit a traditional Lappish hut where you can relax by the fire sitting on logs covered by reindeer pelts and get hot juice with biscuits!
